Eagle's Nest and Bunker at Obersalzberg

The Kehlsteinhaus / Eagle's Nest
The Kehlsteinhaus, called "Eagle's Nest" by the invading American WW2-forces, is located high above the border corner between Germany and Austria. It was built in 1938 as the NS party's present for Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday, just 7 km uphill from his favourite retreat, the "Berghof". Apparently he only used the impressive location 10 times to host state guests. (Source: Wikipedia)
The only way up is by foot or in public buses from Obersalzberg ...
... which have reinforced breaks, tyres and gearboxes to conquer the narrow and steep winding 7 km road.
Finally at the terminus ... (Eagle's Nest visible at the top left)
and the entrance ...
with the 140 m long tunnel ...
to the massive and palatial brass elevator covering the last 124 m up.
Welcome at the top ...
and the breathtaking views over Lake Königssee near Berchtesgaden ...
... and Salzburg in the background, with mythical Untersberg on the left ...
... and with the excellent Interconti Hotel today at the original site of the "Berghof" (center zoomed in).
On the inside, the rather bland Kehlsteinhaus has been cleaned from any reminders of the past ...
except this fireplace out of Carrara-marble which was a gift from Benito Mussolini.

The Berghof Bunker
There is much more history to experience at the "Hotel zum Türken", next to the Interconti, at the original "Berghof" area ...
where parts of the old Führerbunker can be visited today.
This was one of several command headquarters Hitler had all over Europe (Source: Wikipedia)
70 m deep into the mountain rock, towards several machine gun stands ...
"behind this concrete door are the rooms of Hitler, Eva Braun, Dr. Morell"
"ReichsSicherheitsDienst - prison room (burned out after bombardment)"
Further explorations are hindered by concrete. "End of story".
